The best way get skype 2.0 on Ubuntu 7.10 with AMD64 is to download the source instead of the the debian file. Also note that you may need the libraries that I have mentioned here

  • Download the static file from here: http://www.skype.com/intl/en/download/skype/linux/beta/choose/
  • Extract it and get into the skype directory.
  • Enter the following at the terminal
    • $ ./skype

  • You will get error like this: ./skype: error while loading shared libraries: libXss.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
  • Now download install libxss
    • $ apt-get install libxss1

    • $ apt-get install libxss1-dbg

    • $ apt-get install libxss-dev

  • Finally match the shared library using getlibs
    • $ getlibs -32 libXss.so.1

You should get the following output:

    Matched library libXss.so.1 to /gutsy/libs/libxss1
The following i386 libraries will be installed:
    /gutsy/libs/libxss1
    Continue? (y/n) y
    Downloading. Installing libraries …
    /sbin/ldconfig.real: /usr/lib32/libqtmcop.so.1 is not a symbolic link

  • The previous step installs the missing i386 libraries and gets skype 2.0 up and running!

This is enough to get skype running but everytime you have to run skype you’ll have to get into the directory. So lets get the files in the right places. Perform the following steps:

$mkdir /usr/share/skype

$cd pathtoskype-static/

$cp -a * /usr/share/skype

$cp /usr/share/skype/skype /usr/bin

$rm /etc/dbus-1/system.d/skype.conf

$cp /usr/share/skype/skype.conf /etc/dbus-1/system.d/

To Add a shortcut to your desktop, edit /usr/share/skype/skype.desktop

  • Replace Icon = skype.png with
    Icon=/usr/share/skype/icons/SkypeBlue_48x48.png
  • $cp skype.desktop /home/<usrname>/Desktop
  • $chown <username>:<username> /home/<username>/Desktop/skype.desktop

Now to run skype all you need to do is run it from anywhere by typing at the terminal:

$skype

Installing Skype on Ubuntu 7.10 is not as easy if are running it on AMD 64… Here are the steps you need to follow:

  • Install 32 libraries:

sudo aptitude install lib32asound2 ia32-libs-gtk ia32-libs-kde

  • Get the debian package for from the Skype website
  • Install other 32 bit libraries like:

sudo apt-get install libqt4-core

sudo apt-get install libqt4-gui

sudo apt-get install libdbus-1-3

sudo apt-get install libsigc++-2.0-2

  • Install the skype package:

sudo dpkg -i –force-architecture skype-debian_1.4.0.118-1_i386.deb (thats two dashes before force-architecture)

  • Skype will still not come up as it will have some libraries missing. Actually these libraries are already present but skype wont find them as skype will look into only the lib32 directories. the best way to resolve these mappings is to use getlibs (it really works!)

Double click on the package to install it.

  • at the command line do:

getlibs /usr/bin/skype

This post will guide you through a step by step tutorial to get phpbb enabled in your drupal site.

phpbb (http://drupal.org/project/phpbb)

This is a module that lets Drupal handle user- and session-management for phpBB 2.0.x, a popular forum / bulletin board system. The result is that users can be registered, maintained and login through Drupal.

The only drawback, if we can name it that way, is that phpbb is not embedded into the drupal page but is integrated so we do not get a generic look and feel.

Requirements

php 4.x or 5.x
mysql 3.x or 4.x
clean URLs in drupal
drupal 4.x or 5.x
phpbb 2.x

Steps to install and integrate

  • Enable clean urls in drupal: this requires the mod_rewrite module to be enabled in apache. On an ubuntu system this is done by:

cd /etc/apache2

Check if rewrite is already enabled.
apache2ctl -M

Enable the module
sudo a2enmod rewrite

Restart and force reload apache
sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 force-reload

  • In your drupal site, goto Administer->Site Configuration->Clean Urls->enable.
  • Download the phpbb tarball from http://www.phpbb.com/downloads/ and place it in the drupal directory.
  • Enable the menu item called “phpbb”.

Once you click on the phpbb link, it takes you to the phpbb index page where configuration is done. Give the same admin details as present for the drupal and site and make phpbb use the same database drupal is using.

Ever since Ubuntu released its first version, its been known for its strange and interesting choice of names! Ubuntu, in African means “humanity towards others” and what could be a better name for an opensource community project!

The first version of Ubuntu was Ubuntu 4.10 called “Warty Warthog“, whoa what a name! It was released in October 2004 which is why the first version was 4.10 and not 1.something… It was called so as it was their first release and they thought it was a bit warty! So how did this name come into being??? Here’s how…

lifeless: how long before we make a first release?
sabdfl: it would need to be punchy. six months max.
lifeless: six months! thats not a lot of time for polish.
sabdfl: so we'll have to nickname it the warty warthog release.

lifeless is Robert Collins. sabdfl is Mark Shuttleworth.

Then came Ubuntu 5.04 called “Hoary Hedgehog” released in April 2005. This was because they wanted to stick to the “hog” names! This literally meant “covered with hair” (yuck!) but silently signified a version of Ubuntu that was wiser and more mature, being their second release…

The third Ubuntu release had a very classy name indeed… “Breezy Badger“, Ubuntu 5.10 was released in October 2005 and pointed out something fresh, brisk and full of life. It was originally supposed to be called “Bendy Badger” which was actually a very cool name in itself but finally settled with “breezy” because of its ease of upgrade. Actually they had another contender for the name- Grumpy Groundhog but din’t want to name an awesome looking distro grumpy! Grumpy Groundhog is still a surprise piece of Ubuntu and not much is known about it…

Next came Ubuntu 6.06… “Dapper Drake” – neat, trim and smart! For this release, the community committed supporting it for 3 years on desktop and 5 years on the server. In Mark Shuttleworth’s words…

It's 6.04 that will be up against Windows Vista, so let's make it a
zinger and give folks a real choice.

The 6.04 release will be the culmination of 2 years hard work, with Warty, Hoary and Breezy having set the style and the pace. We want it toDapper Drake represent the fruit of that labour - it brings to a close this first major cycle of development for Ubuntu. It will be a release that people can plan for, participate in and build solutions on top of. It will get even more polish than we put into Breezy, so we think it deserves a name that reflects that polish.

The next release for Ubuntu was “Edgy Eft” or Ubuntu 6.10… It can be explained in 4 four words as Fire up the crackpipes! (?!). It was named so because Edgy was believed to be the cutting edge of brand new code and infrastructure… Some new features included usinf Xen for virtualization, Xgl/AIGLX for wobbly window effects, multiarch support for true mixed 32-bit and 64-bit computing on AMD64, a Network Manager and other interesting features.

Then came our very own 7.04 released in April 2007, popularly known as “Feisty Fawn“… This is one of the most stable Ubuntu release. Courage and restlessness are two words that summarize Feisty… like a young deer who sets out to explore the new and exciting world! Feisty is more to do with features that are visible to the end user- like desktop effects and other emerging desktop technologies.

Now we come to the most awaited release of Ubuntu just a few days away… say hello to “Gutsy Gibbon” – Ubuntu 7.10! Well Gutsy won the race putting behind contenders Feiry Fox and Icy Weasel. According to Mark Shuttleworth,

Our Gutsy is an expert in brachiation, which is apt for a project that needs to navigate a complicated forest of branches very quickly.
While Ubuntu is by no means the 800-pound gorilla in the server game, the Gibbon will show that lean and mean count for something! Agility of deployment, together with integrated management will be a focus for the Ubuntu server team. Gutsy will not be an LTS (Long Term Support) release, but it will nonetheless see a lot of server work and be useful for fast-moving server deployments.

Everyone’s waiting for Gutsy and so am I!

While Gutsy is still not out, the Ubuntu community went out to announce the name for its next release- 8.04 due in April 2008. While most people wanted Hungry Hippo, the codename decided is “Hardy Heron”. Not much is known about this release though its going to be an LTS release with 3 years support on the desktop and 5 years on the server.

So for all those of you who wondered what’s with the funky naming system Ubuntu is famous for, here’s it!

I’m sure all wordpress users cant get enough if it and will totally agree with the fact that this is
*THE* coolest blog provider! Be it themes, widgets, functionality, management or support… wordpress does everything in a very classy manner!

Recently I was trying to find out if there is a URL that can directly take me to my recent posts, so what I did was hit http://divyad.wordpress.com/recent which unfortunately does not actually exist.. Obviously I would see one of those bland 404 error pages but here I din’t see that this time. What popped up on my browser window was something totally interesting, see it for yourself by clicking that link above!

Classy, innovative, interesting.. afterall its WordPress!
